Car Navigation

GeoSmart is the leading supplier of Car Navigation mapping data In New Zealand. We have the only full turn-restriction dataset of virtually all public roads in New Zealand, NOT just the main urban centres. Because the standard data for New Zealand lacked detail and included paper roads (roads that have been drafted but not constructed), we couldn’t use it to create a dataset acceptable to manufacturers of quality car navigation systems.

We have driven over 94,000 km of public roads (N.B. we count dual carriageways as 1 road, not 2) in New Zealand collecting a large range of road attributes including; correct road names, turn restrictions (one way streets as well as no left turn, no right turn etc), speed zones, paving, angles of corners (to assist in travel time calculation when the speed limit is faster than realistic driving speeds), type and angles of intersections, intersection controls and much more. We did this in order to create a viable car navigation and routing database. It was the only way to derive this data. Of course we continue to drive and collect data as new roads and subdivisions are built and when roads are modified. We have also mapped a lot of private forest roads and national parks.

Our public road dataset has been independently audited by a number of companies including: Navman, TomTom, MetroView, Laser, Siemens VDO (Europe and Australasia) as well as leading car brands such as BMW, Ford and Honda.

We are the sole provider of New Zealand mapping data to the leading car navigation brands in New Zealand including Navman, TomTom and Siemens VDO for both integrated and portable navigation systems.

All brands of car navigation products using GeoSmart Maps also have access to our wide range of Points of Interest data (everything from public toilets to tourist attractions) and of course AA Traffic, the real time traffic service which alerts you to incidents that may stop you from getting to your destination on time.

There will be more car and personal navigation systems coming into the country. If you want a navigation system you can trust, make sure it has GeoSmart SmartNAV mapping data. If you are unsure please give us a call and we would be happy to assist.
