For the conventional functions of town planning, there is probably nothing better than your conventional GIS application. However, you will want to share a lot of information with external partners, visitors and constituents and one way to do that is on the web.

GeoSmart of course does offer lots of services for town planners that can be used in conjunction with their GIS solutions.

GIS systems manage huge amounts of data and generally require a graduate’s skills in order to use them. They require computers that are high powered and have lots of memory and high bandwidth. That is good and appropriate inside council and in the drafting room, but not for external use in most cases.
